Overview

Almost every server ends up with a suggestions channel, and almost every one of them stops working the same way: ideas pile up, a few get reactions, nobody answers, and after a month the channel is an archive of things that were never going to happen. The board fixes the part that actually broke — not collecting suggestions, but closing them. Every suggestion gets a number people can quote, a vote count, and a staff decision with a reason attached. The member who sent it is told the outcome directly.

How it works

One command, one numbered post

A member runs /suggest and their idea appears on the board as #12, with vote buttons under it. The number is per server and sequential, so it is short enough to say out loud in a voice channel — which is what people actually do with it.

Votes that cannot be stuffed

One row per voter, so a double-click, a retry after a dropped connection or the same person on two devices can never inflate a total. Clicking the side you already picked takes your vote back; clicking the other side switches it.

Answers, not silence

Approve, Decline and Mark done sit under every suggestion. Pressing one opens a box for the reason — optional, but offered every time, because an unexplained decline is the complaint every suggestion channel eventually generates. The decision is written onto the post and sent to the author as a direct message.

Review first, if you want it

With review turned on, suggestions land in a staff-only channel and reach the board only once somebody approves them. Rejected ones are never posted publicly — announcing something in order to say no to it is noise.

Setup

1.Open the dashboard, go to the Suggestions tab, enable it and pick the channel the board lives in.

2.Decide whether suggestions are reviewed first. If they are, pick the staff channel they queue in — without one, every suggestion is refused.

3.Add your staff roles. Anyone with Manage Server can already answer suggestions, so this is only for moderators who do not have it.

4.Leave the cooldown and length limits at their defaults for a week, then adjust them once you have seen what your server actually sends.

How it works in detail

The point is the answer, not the suggestion

Collecting ideas is the easy half and every server already does it with a channel and a reaction emoji. What that setup cannot do is close anything: there is no way to say "we decided no, and here is why" that stays attached to the idea, so the same suggestion returns every few months and the staff answer it again in chat. The board keeps the decision, its reason and the person who made it on the post itself, permanently — which is why a suggestion answered in March is still answered in September.

Anonymity that is safe to switch on

Anonymous mode hides the author from the board but never from staff: the review queue and the log both name them. That is deliberate. A board where nobody can be held to what they wrote invites exactly the behaviour a moderator then has to deal with, and a board where the author's name sits under an unpopular idea suppresses the ideas worth hearing. Naming them to the four people who decide, and to nobody else, is the setting that makes both problems smaller.

Settings

Suggestion channelWhere suggestions are posted for the server to see. Without this the board has nowhere to write and every suggestion is refused.

Review before postingSuggestions go to a staff channel first and reach the board only once someone approves them. Use it if you would rather not moderate the board in public.

Review channelThe staff-only queue. It names the author even when the board does not, because approving something is a decision about a person as much as an idea.

VotingAdds vote buttons under each suggestion. Turn it off to keep the board a plain list of ideas staff answer.

Allow votes againstWhen off, members can only support a suggestion. Useful in servers where a public pile-on is the thing you are trying to avoid.

Close voting once answeredStops accepting votes once staff have answered. Leave it off if you want members to keep signalling on decisions already made.

Hide the authorThe board shows "Anonymous" instead of the member's name. Staff still see who sent it, in the queue and in the log. This is read per suggestion, so turning it off later never unmasks anyone who posted while it was on.

Open a discussion threadOpens a thread under each posted suggestion so discussion stays out of the board itself. Sylon needs Create Public Threads in that channel.

DM the author when answeredSends the author a direct message with the decision and its reason. Nothing is sent if their DMs are closed.

Cooldown between suggestions (seconds)How long a member waits between suggestions. 0 means no wait.

Suggestions awaiting an answer per memberHow many suggestions one member may have open at once, so a single person cannot fill the queue. 0 means no limit.

Minimum length (characters)Suggestions shorter than this are refused, which stops "pls add stuff". 0 means no minimum.

Maximum length (characters)The longest a suggestion may be. This one cannot be switched off — a maximum of zero would mean nothing may be sent.

Staff rolesRoles that may approve, decline and mark suggestions done. Members with Manage Server always can, so leaving this empty is not a lockout.

Roles allowed to suggestLeave empty to let the whole server suggest. Naming roles here turns it into a whitelist.

Roles blocked from suggestingThese roles cannot send suggestions, even if they also hold an allowed role.

Log ChannelThe channel where the bot will send log messages for this feature.

Good to know

Sylon needs to be able to see and send messages in the board channel, and Create Public Threads as well if you turn threads on.

Suggestions are refused before anything is stored if the board channel is missing — the dashboard and /diagnose both report that state.

Deleting a suggestion removes its board message and its votes; the log keeps the record that it existed and who removed it.

Everything a member wrote is removed when the server or the member is purged.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop one person filling the board?

Two settings do it independently. The cooldown is a wait between suggestions; the open-suggestion quota caps how many a single member can have awaiting an answer at once, so somebody who sends three and never gets a reply cannot send a fourth. Both accept 0, which means no limit.

What happens to a suggestion nobody can see, if I turn anonymity off later?

Nothing. Anonymity is stored on each suggestion when it is sent, not read from your settings when the board is drawn. Turning the setting off changes what happens next, never what already happened — the one mistake here that could not be undone by changing the setting back.

Do votes stay open after a decision?

By default no: once staff answer, the buttons come off. You can leave them on if you would rather members keep signalling on something already decided — some servers use that as evidence for revisiting it.

Can a suggestion ping the whole server?

No. Suggestions are posted with mentions switched off entirely, so @everyone, @here and role mentions inside a suggestion are text and nothing else. That holds for the reason a moderator types as well.
